Topic: Ethical Challenges in SARS-CoV2 Vaccine Development and Delivery

This presentation will address the numerous ethical challenges and controversies and competing forces confronting the development and roll-out of vaccines against SARS-CoV2.

With the disruption of every aspect of life as we have known it, society waits with great anxiety and
anticipation for the arrival of a safe and efficacious vaccine against SARS-CoV2, the novel coronavirus that causes COVID-19. Scientific challenges notwithstanding, we do have reason to be optimistic about development of a vaccine, if not multiple vaccines, given the extraordinary amount of financial and intellectual resources that have been put behind vaccine development, the unprecedented international andindustry-academic-governmental collaborations, and the cooperation and assistance of regulatory agencies. However, both development and ultimate roll-out of vaccines against SARS-CoV2 are fraught with ethical challenges, not the least of which are the political forces and tensions at home and abroad that could be interpreted as straining to influence the approval and roll-out processes. This presentation will summarize some of the ethical challenges in SARS-CoV2 vaccine development and delivery, ranging from clinical trial design, to required levels of efficacy, to prioritization of who gets the vaccine as it’s rolled out, to issues concerning who is at the table influencing and adjudicating these issues.
